Instructions for authors

Geografisk Tidsskrift-Danish Journal of Geography, publishes papers in the following forms:

Articles - Full research papers that will be submitted to two peer reviewers before acceptance for publication.
Notes - Briefer communications assessed by the editors. For example a note can be a description of a region, a theme, a method.

Submission
Papers submitted to the journal should follow the guidelines set out below. All correspondence between editor and author is performed by e-mail, and paper copies are not required at the original submission stage. A manuscript must be submitted electronically as email attachment (or on a cd/dvd). The manuscript, including illustrations, tables, etc., must carefully consider the guidelines given below. Articles should be no longer than 8,000 words.
Contributions are received with the understanding that they comprise original, unpublished material and are not being submitted for publication elsewhere.

Presentation
Manuscripts should be written in English and typed in the journal style, double spaced and with a wide left hand margin. Footnotes must be avoided. If English is not the author's mother tongue, please arrange proofreading by a native English speaker before submission.

Manuscripts should be arranged in the following order of presentation and in separate files. Author details should only appear in the Cover letter and Title page documents.

Each sheet must carry the abbreviated title of the article in a header.


I: Cover letter
Stating that the paper has not been published elsewhere and is not under review elsewhere.

II: Title page
Title, author's name, affiliation, full postal address and telephone and fax numbers; a word count. Respective affiliations and addresses of co-authors should be clearly indicated.

III: Abstract
of up to 200 words.

IV: Main manuscript
with 1) the title of the paper; 2) main body of text; 3) list of references; 4) captions for figures; 5) captions for tables; 5) appendixes.

Text
Main body can be max 8000 words. The text should be double-spaced and organized under appropriate section headings. All headings should be placed on the left-hand side of the text. The pages in the manuscript must be numbered.
The location of illustrations, tables, etc. in the text should be indicated by a line break after a paragraph and writing the number of the illustration or table.
Only three levels of headings are accepted in the text and do not number the headings.
Avoid unnecessary formatting and codes, avoid the automatic hyphenation function and do not hyphenate manually at line breaks.
All measurements should be given in metric units.

Acknowledgements may be made briefly just before the list of references.


Illustrations
Illustrations, figures, diagrams, and photos should be ready for immediate use and included in a single numbered series. The format should be designed to occupy 1 or 2 columns i.e. 85 mm respectively 176 mm, alternatively 124 mm, - they must not exceed one page.
Grades in the legend should be easy to distinguish. The font size of text in illustrations should not be too large. A font 'sans serif' - for example 'Helvetica' in 8 pt - is suitable.
Folded or detached illustrations or tables are not accepted. Colour plates only accepted if costs are covered by the author.
File formats for the illustrations: ai, eps (adobe illutrator), wmf, cgm.
Photos should have a resolution of 300 dpi. The format should normally be designed to occupy 1 or 2 columns i.e. 85 mm respectively 176 mm - they must not exceed one page. File formats for the photo: Tiff (pc), psd, bmp, jpeg.

 
Tables
Tables should be included in a single numbered series and must be made in a table function, preferably the Microsoft Word Table Function; pay attention not to use the space key - only the choice from the justification option are to be used when space is needed. The format of these should normally be designed to occupy 1or 2 columns i.e. 85 mm respectively 176 mm, alternatively 124 mm.

Citations in text
Cited references in the text are to be cited in the text using the surname(s) of the author(s) followed by the year of publication of the work referred to, for example: Tivy (1990), (Tivy, 1990), (Tivy & Smith, 1993) or for references to page (Tivy, 1990: 7). In case of more than two authors use name of first author followed by "et al." (Smith et al., 1995). If several works are cited, they should be organized chronologically, starting with oldest work. In the case of more than two authors the reference is to be written Jensen et al. (1988).

Reference List
Typography: Please never use any special typography (bold, underline, italics).

Articles in journals:

Whittsley, D. (1936): Major agricultural regions of the World. Annals of the Association of American Geographers 26(2):190-240.
Please notice for articles:
- the author names: family name first and then initials.
- printing year followed by ‘colon’

- omit abbreviations like vol., no. etc. - include the indication of pages: 26(2):190-240.

- never use abbreviations

- for more than one author use ‘&’ (e.g. Jensen, P. & Nielsen, H. (2007))

Articles and chapters in books with an editor:

Hunter, J. M. (1972): Population pressure in a part of the West African savanna. Pp. 152-161 in: Prothero, R. M. (ed.): People and land in Africa South of the Sahara. New York, Oxford University Press.

Books:

Tivy, J. (1990): Agricultural Ecology. Harlow, Longman.
Please notice for books and book chapters:
- name format as for articles.
- include place of publishing as well as publisher (first place - then publisher). In the case publicher has departments in more places just write the place of headquater or where the book has been issued.

- do NOT indicate the total number of pages for books

- for books in series include name of the series as well as the number within it (e.g. Geographica Hafniensia, C7).


Copyright
If the manuscript includes material formerly published elsewhere, written permission must be obtained from the author or source and submitted with the manuscript.

Proof 
A first proof (page proof) will be sent to the corresponding author, who should in particular check numbers, proper names, tables, and mathematical expressions. Moreover, it is the responsibility of the contributors that calculations, references, names of places and of people as well biological terms, etc. are correct. At this stage it is not possible to add further text, tables or illustrations to the paper. The editors may make minor changes in the text; greater ones, e.g. proposed by the referees, are made in cooperation with the contributor. The authors are allowed to make photocopies of their own papers published in Geografisk Tidsskrift, Danish Journal of Geography.
